Part of the excitement attached to exploring the Kruger National Park is not knowing what you might encounter around the next corner. It might be lions on a kill, a leopard lazing up in a bough, elephants crossing the road, a rhino staring you down, or a dazzling bee-eater or roller darting overhead. This vast wildlife sanctuary, extending across an incredible 20,000km², never ceases to throw up new and interesting sightings.

An Afrikaans name meaning Mountain and Valley, Berg-en-Dal is the most southerly rest camp in Kruger, and the hilly surrounds include the national park’s highest peak. It opened in 1984, making it relatively modern by Kruger standards, and unlike older camps, the natural vegetation was largely preserved during construction. Relax in the restaurant and enjoy views over the Matjula Reservoir or stretch your legs on a short walking trail that offers much to bird-watchers.

Day 5 - St Lucia
St Lucia is a contender for the title of South Africa’s wildest town. It occupies a jungle-swathed peninsula sandwiched between the vast St Lucia estuary and the open waters of the Indian Ocean. Here, you shouldn’t be surprised if you see hippo, warthog or bushbuck roaming the streets, or heavyweight birds such as African fish eagle, trumpeter hornbill and purple crested turaco calling loudly from the canopy. Wildlife aside, St Lucia is a modern town with plenty of restaurants, and it forms the best urban base for exploring iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its terrestrial and marine biodiversity.

Day 6 & 7 Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve
Divided by the two forest-lined rivers for which it is named, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi offers some of the most exciting Big Five wildlife viewing of any state-owned reserve in South Africa. Here, you're almost certain to encounter the hulking great white rhino, which spends most of its time grazing in open grassland. Look out, too, for elephant, buffalo, giraffe and the handsome greater kudu and nyala antelope, as well as more secretive residents such as lion, leopard and black rhino. Evening Game Drive, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve You'll love the warm light and cooler temperatures as we take you out to explore on your evening game drive. This time of day is when both predators and prey are most active, and it can feel as though anything could happen at any moment. This is when you'll most enjoy being on safari.
